How the pension works
- The Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) is run under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP).
- The central government gives Rs 200 a month to eligible people aged 60 to 79 and Rs 500 a month to those aged 80 and above. Many states add their own amount, so what you receive can be higher.
- Eligibility is based on age and a below-poverty-line (BPL) household. States may use their own list or certificate.
How to apply, step by step
- Keep proof of age, BPL certificate or ration card, Aadhaar, bank or post office passbook and a passport-size photo ready.
- Get the application form from your gram panchayat, block office, municipal office or the social welfare department. Many states also accept applications on their own pension portal.
- Fill in the form and attach copies of the documents.
- Submit it at the same office and keep the acknowledgement or receipt.
- The local officer verifies your details. If approved, the pension is paid monthly to your bank or post office account.
